Evening Pages
In determining how I might approach my reunion with this tumblr page, I’ve come up with a few guidelines:
1. Avoid narcy musings (sharing updates about how I’ve reached new levels of consciousness or where I am on my journey - avoid the word journey entirely)
2. Keep it simple enough to want to revisit prior to 2013
3. Try to restrict the amount of restrictions
4. Have fun with it!
5. Pretend I’m not writing as if someone’s reading over my shoulder telling me what’s cliche, repetitive or uninteresting
6. Do it because I want to, not because I feel like I should (keep up with the Jonases)
7. If halfway through, you decide a list of 10 guidelines would be a great start AND finish, honor that!
8. If you find yourself writing something that only serves to make yourself seem cool, lose it (unless you can talk yourself into believing it serves the “piece” well).
9. If you realize that you’re using different narration styles (first person vs. third person), let go of the need to correct it or mention your awareness of it.
10. If you look at #8 and realize you’ve said nothing that makes you look cool, don’t go searching for something you could say to justify leaving that line in there.
This must be how David Sedaris got his start.
